Legal for Cold Weather Tyres

Studded tires are generally not permitted in Germany. An exemption may be granted by the relevant road authorities the discretion to § 70 traffic regulations. In general, these only for special vehicles (ambulance services, technical auxiliary, ...) is issued. Under special weather layers, a road authority to declare a particular region 'spikes area' and thus allow individuals such tires. There is a special (parallel to Austrian control) only for Austrian drivers in a 15 km wide strip along the Austrian border, from early October to late May.

Vehicles from 3,000 drivers in Europe were equipped with special measurement devices to record data about the tires' use. These valuable findings are being employed in the development of future tire models, making them better suited to the needs of real drivers.
