NEXEN WINGUARD SPORT WINTER TYRE REVIEW: After only finding a couple of reviews I bit the bullet and bought these tyres pretty much based on price and the fact people said they weren’t going to put me in a ditch. Well, I’m glad I did buy them, granted this is my first foray into winter tyres but I have been very impressed. On the plus side they are excellent in snow and offer good braking and excellent control in loose or compacted snow. Granted my car is 4WD but they gave an excellent feeling of control in snowy conditions. I managed to tow a Renault Master van up a hill in snow with no dramas at all other than the surprised looks on the faces of the van driver and passenger (and mine to be honest). I tried to tow a Volvo up the same hill last year in my Range Rover Sport and failed dismally (with summer tyres) so I think that says it all for their snow performance. On wet or just plain cold roads they offer fantastic grip (and have caught out people trying to follow me) and so far the wear rate seems good considering I’ve given them a hard time. On the down side they were not good on sheet ice, but what tyre is without studs so that’s probably an unfair test. The other down side is braking stability at high speeds in the wet or dry, I’ve had these tyres up to about 135mph with no issues or extra noise, but when you brake hard from over 100mph there is a noticeable instability and perceived tread shuffle that de-stabilises the car and keeps you on your toes. This however might be a factor of the added tread depth with all winter tyres so that might be a little unfair. All round I am very very impressed and would buy them again in a heart beat (they also look pretty good, well as much as any tyre can “look good”). Overall I’d give them a 9 out of 10. I wrote this long review in the hope that more people will buy these budget tyres and enjoy some winter driving on a budget, just like I have. Great job Nexen, thanks.
